Loved the movie, thought it was the best Spider-man movie we've gotten to date. I enjoyed the Raimi movies at the time (being lukewarm on the 3rd especially because of what they did to Venom), but after re-watching them, they didn't age as well as I thought they would - the second movie was probably the exception.
Things I loved:
- Michael Keaton as vulture - the guy was really outstanding. Thought he had a well-developed arch, and went places I didn't think he could. The car scene with Peter was really tense. He and Doc Oc are so far my favorite villains in the Spiderman movies we've gotten so far.
- Tom Holland fit perfectly in the role, both as Spiderman and Peter Parker. He had great chemistry with RDJ, and a lot of his other cast mates (Ned in particular).
- I loved how this sidestepped all the Uncle Ben stuff, the 'with great power comes great responsibility' stuff, while still being an 'origins' story true to Spider-man. The movie showed how Peter came from a small-time superhero, to wanting to be bigger than he is (and being reckless), to growing up and ultimately, coming into his own as Spider-man.
- Easter eggs: 1) Loved Michael Mando's short stint as scorpion - nung narining ko yung Mac Gargan (and saw the tattoo) I really went giddy lol. 2) Didn't know Donald Glover was going to be in the movie, and it was cool to see him there (as Miles' uncle too), 3) Seeing the Iron Spider suit was super hype, 4) lol at the Nolan Batman bit during the interrogation.
- The humor was actually good in this, and the jokes landed for me (for the most part). The Happy and Peter stuff was great, and so was the Ned and Peter stuff.
- Pepper Potts finally returned! I actually missed having her around, and the little bit of interaction she had with Tony in the end was really fun!
Things which were just okay or meh:
- I liked most of the supporting cast, Michelle's character was pretty cool, though I don't know how i feel about the MJ reveal. It caught me off guard, but I can't really gauge how I feel about it until we see how it plays out.
- Didn't feel the chemistry between Liz and Peter. This was meh.
Things that I found questionable:
- I was about halfway through the movie til I realized that this version of Spider-man didn't have any explicit "Spider-sense" moments. I don't know if it just wasn't emphasized, or they wanted to explore his vulnerability a bit more - because he was caught off-guard by Shocker a number of times.
- No mention of the Daily Bugle, or J Jonah Jameson. Maybe it would have been too hard to introduce him (in what was mostly set in high school), but it didn't feel right without Jameson there.
That's about it, loved it a lot. My wife, who was turned off by Spider-man movies (she hates the Garfield and Maguire movies) actually enjoyed it too. Would watch again, and am very excited to see where they take the franchise next.
I hope we get some sort of Sinister 6 plot for the next one, since they were setting this up already with Shocker still out, and Scorpion talking to Vulture about wanting to get revenge on Spider-man.
