3DS Fire Emblem Kicks Off Nintendo Paid Download Content

Nintendo is targeting March 2012 for the start of paid download content sales for 3DS. The first game to see paid download content will be the 3DS entry in the Fire Emblem series.

According to the Nikkei report, players will be able to use either prepaid cards or credit card to make purchases. The 3DS firmware was already updated for billing functionality earlier this month.

Third party publishers are also making preparations for paid download content to begin rolling out starting summer 2012.

Nikkei aslo reports that Nintendo is planning on including similar paid download content functionality in the Wii U, which is due for release in 2012.

Nintendo has not shared details on the 3DS version of Fire Emblem since its announcement in September. The game was announced with a Spring release time frame. Nikkei's report would seem to suggest a more specific March time frame.

It's likely that download content and Fire Emblem's release will be covered in tomorrow Nintendo Direct broadcast, where CEO Satoru Iwata himself will outline Nintendo's game plan through March 2012.

It looks like Nintendo is finally ready to begin promoting the 3DS entry in the Fire Emblem series. The game is featured in the latest issue of Jump, which means we should be getting coverage through Famitsu and hopefully online as well over the coming week.

As detailed late last year, the 3DS Fire Emblem game is fully titled Fire Emblem Kakusei, or "Awakening." English language text beneath the logo in Jump explains the meaning of the Awakening part:

"Two sleeping dragons -- one a sacred ally of mankind, the other its sworn destroyer. Two heroes marked with symbols of the dragons. Their meeting heralds the dragons' awakening -- and the world's ending."

Jump introduces the game's main character Krom, prince of the Kingdom of Iris. As Fire Emblem fans have speculated, he is of the Lord class and wields a weapon called Sealed Sword Falchion.

Krom is not the only main character, though. The game lets you create your own unit, freely selecting gender, face parts and other areas. This character serves as the game's other main character. The meeting between Krom and this character is a major part of the story.

Jump also introduces two gameplay components, Free Maps and the new Dual system. Free Maps are a returning feature from past Fire Emblem games. This system lets you freely move across the map and buy goods or take part in battle. The Dual system is triggered when you enter battle while next to an ally. You and the ally will enter battle together. In addition to your character gaining increased abilities, the ally character will help out with attacks of his own.

Limited Edition Fire Emblem 3DS bound for US
Unique 3DS coming with Fire Emblem Awakening pre-installed

Nintendo of America has confirmed it will release a Limited Edition Fire Emblem Awakening 3DS in North America and Canada.

The system will be a standard 3DS model, with a blue casing adorned with Fire Emblem-themed insignias.

The console will also come with a digital copy of Fire Emblem Awakening pre-installed.

There's no word on price or availability yet, but we expect to see it in shops on the game's US release of February 4.
