Christian group rebukes gay Jesus depiction

“Corpus Christi” will visit The City in stage and film formats.A documentary about a play that recasts Jesus Christ as a gay man has unsurprisingly drawn the ire of Christian groups, but prominent LGBT politicians plan to stand behind the film when it’s shown this weekend at the Castro Theatre.

State Sen. Mark Leno, Supervisor Scott Wiener and gay-friendly theologians say they plan to show up to defend the rights of filmmakers to display their work.

“I am not a theologian or a religion historian, and I’m not Christian,” Wiener said. “But from what I understand, Jesus means a lot of things to a lot of different people … no one has a monopoly on what a particular religion means.”

America Needs Fatima, a Pennsylvania-based group focused on activism and observing apparitions of the Virgin Mary, thinks differently. According to its website, the group has gathered more than 13,500 signatures on a form petition that decries the filmmakers for promoting a “blasphemous homosexual play” and demands a “public apology to Our Lord Jesus Christ and to all God-fearing Americans.”

The group, which did not return requests for comment, appears to take particular issue with the Jesus character in the play “reportedly” having “sexual relations” with his apostles. Wiener said people protesting the movie also have a right to state their case.

The documentary, “Corpus Christi: Playing With Redemption,” follows actors and promoters as they hold productions of Terrence McNally’s 1998 play, “Corpus Christi,” which depicts Jesus living in 1950s Texas. A Castro Theatre manager said there are no plans to pull the movie over the protest, but declined to comment further.

A spokeswoman for the delegation of supporters said members of the film and play group have been subject to “threats” in the form of bomb scares, emails, comments on YouTube and harassment of the director’s mother. In a statement, promoters said they appreciate the support in light of the adversity.

“We have no doubt that ‘Corpus Christi’s’” message of God’s inclusive love for LGBT people will drown out the angry words of those who attack our play without having seen it,” said director Nic Arnzen.

Leno said the subject matter of the play isn’t “easy,” but that “to the degree it is difficult, it’s also important.” The senator said some of the activism against the play, and especially the bomb threats, are outside the scope of First Amendment rights.

“I think I have to put that in the same category as Muslim extremists,” Leno said. “This is an unfortunate aspect of religion, and I say that as a person of faith.”

The Sunday showing of the documentary will be complemented by performances of the play in Fort Mason on Saturday and in a Unitarian chapel on Sunday and Monday.

San Francisco has proven to be a common venue for reinterpretations of Christian values, including the annual “hunky Jesus” competition observed on Easter at Dolores Park.

its funny really how gays say they are maligned by society, but take every advantage to malign everyone else who doesn't support their agenda. they're not the innocent victims they claim to be.

hello everyone

to cut the story short, im the original and legit user of the handle jasonmasi before.. i shared the account with some of my college buddies since well, college days.. i used my account to browse ps3 and pc sections.. my friends used it for selling and god knows what.. no pun intended

then sometime in january one of them told me my account got banned  i told him to create a new one because that time was the ps vita hot days and i need to check vita threads.. so he made me this "imban" account (imba na ban? ) so i said whatever and went along.. a few days ago i got curious what happened, i sent a message to some admins, choy and cel-shaded responded and told me i got banned for trolling  well, at least its not scamming people, because my friends usually used the for buying/selling.. i cant see my previous posts, so yesterday i asked my friend which particular thread he was trolling and said look for the religion thread.. then i said, religion? what the hell were you thinking

anyway, whatever the trolling or commotion that account caused in this thread, i apologize for everything.. i hope nobody got offended.. he's a good guy in real life

---

and to make this not out of topic, i'm usually neutral when it comes to religion .. thats about it, coz i dont really have much to say about the topic

Tsaka kung walang bible ... people will just do things they want. They won't follow the 10 commandments. Our world will be in chaos ... no order.

Only god knows everything at he share it to his prophets ... and these prophets wrote it and become the bible for people to learn, be saved and come unto christ.

Hindi ako naniniwala na galing tayo sa apes as what Darwin is claiming. Thru evolution kaya tayo na form, malabo iyon.

Hi Darkshader,

According to Darwin
We actually didn't just come from Apes, we in fact are the fifth Ape.
There are gibbons, orang-utans, gorillas, chimpanzees and us.
We look, do and think things differently because we evolved into much better species.
Of course there is another theory that man evolved from dust and a rib-turned-into-a-woman.
We have the freedom to decide which to believe.

Here's an informative video if you have time to spare

it's a 3 part series
Have a great day :)

@jireckpuge

sorry but i don't really believe that we come from apes. maraming sinabi sa bible na nangyari na .... at mangyayari pa lang. sabi nga sa bible "faith without works is dead". paano ka maniniwala kung hindi mo naman sinusunod ang kautusan ng diyos. hindi lang basta mabait na tao ... eh okay na iyon. kailangan isabuhay mo ang itinuturo ni jesus at gawin ang kanyang commandments. you get bless and also receive blessing if we follow jesus christ. don't expect any changes in your life or get blessing kung hindi mo naman sya sinusunod. then every thing will fall in to places and you will find out that every thing in the bible says is true. hindi ako naniniwala na basta maniwala ka sa diyos ay saved ka na as what other religions/people says ... you have to work on it ... you have to search and pray if the things you read in the bible is true. that is how i built up my testimony that the bible is true ... kung bible ay too then totoo din ang mga prophets na nagsulat nito ... kung naniniwala ka na totoo ang prophets then totoo si jesus christ.

god works in mysterious ways. hindi nya sinabi na madaling mabuhay sa mundong eto. lahat ay pagsubok lamang dahil temporary lang tayo sa mundo. tinitingnan nya kung susunduin mo pa ba sya kung lahat ng problema ay dumating sa iyo. he is just testing all of us, kakalimutan ba natin sya sa konting problema na dumaan lang? kung and diyos ibibigay lahat ng sagot sa ating katanungan .... then para pa saan ang FAITH kung inahain na sa atin ang sagot. And ano pa ang purpose ni satan to temp us kung lahat pala masasagip kahit may kasalanan? That is why it is important to believe in him and follow his teachings/commandments until the final judgement dahil lahat naman tayo ay mamamatay.

kung walang bible or scriptures, we would have chaos in the world. kanya kanyang palakad na lang. wala ng morality. ganon pa man kahit hindi tayo sumunod sa utos ng diyos ... ay meron tayong choice na sundin sya or hindi. Pero kung kailangan natin ng magandang ehemplo eh nandyan si jesus christ. tinubos na nya ang kasalanan natin kaya napaka-importante ang role nya dahil hindi tayo makakabalik sa ama natin sa langit kung may kasalanan tayo. ang hinihingi lang nya sa atin is to repent, get baptize, then follow him. very easy to say but hard to do.

i'll give you an example. merong two missionaries na nag serve sa mindanao. isang filipino at isang amerikano. iyong mismong filipino ang nagkuwento nito sa amin sa church after his mission. they are giving service to the filipino farmers like helping them to plant rice. ngayon napadaan daw iyong mga NPA. Sabi ng NPA sa kanilang dalawa missionary na pagnakita ko kayo dito ulit papatayin namin kayo. pero hindi natakot iyong amerikano. sabi nya sa kapartner nya na pinoy .. if we have faith we will be saved. don't be afraid. at that time medyo mahina pa faith ng filipino at gusto na nyang umalis doon.

ng dumating iyong second time na dumating iyong NPA nakita sila ulit kasama ang mga farmers. ayon binaril iyong amerikano. bumagsak ... patay ... tapos umalis iyong mga NPA. iyak ng iyak iyong filipino ginigising nya iyong kasama nya. akala nya patay na iyong kasama nya. pero miracle happened ... alam mo ba na nabuhay iyong amerikano. iyong bullet na tumama sa kanya nag stuck or na-pipit sa name plate nya na gawa lang sa plastic. plastic lang iyon bakit hindi tatagos iyon? doon mo makikita na they are being protected by the spirit of the lord. walang sugat iyong amerikano, nawalan lang sya ng malay due to the impact of bullet pero gumising sya. pati mga farmers nagulat. how can somebody explain it? either science won't be able to explain it? anong moral lesson doon? ... it means walang impossible kung gusto kang iligtas ng diyos as long as you exercise your faith. so kailangan pa ba ng miracle para lang maniwala?

@jireckpuge

part of it response and part of it my experience din that i want to share.

no doubt charles darwin is very intelligent man. i did watch the video ... pero theory lang naman nya iyon. i do believe that dinosaurs and other species existed before. God creates this earth and its heaven and all forms of life in six days, then in the 7th day he rested. so who knows iyong each day that god created the earth is maybe equal to millions or billions of earth years. hindi natin puwede gawing literal iyong isang araw ng diyos ay equal sa isang araw ng earth time. sino bang nagsabi na mabilis gawin ang mundo? :) then lastly, god created adam and eve. malay natin by the time na ginawa ng god iyong tao eh billions of years na ang nakalipas kaya akala ni darwin eh galing tayo sa apes dahil nauna silang gawin ni god.

bottom line is i'm more concern about the welfare of my soul and follow the teachings of jesus christ. kaysa isipin ko ang theory ni darwin, hindi naman makakatulong iyan sa salvation ko bilang isang christiano. mas mabuting maniwala sa diyos dahil kung totoo (which i know is true) you are saved as long as you follow his commandments. again kailangan you follow ... hindi lang basta maniwala. kung ayaw naman ng atheist maniwala (or deny god) at namatay at nalaman pala na totoo na merong god ... anong excuses nila? naniwala ako kay darwin kaya sorry ... sige na please papasukin ninyo ako sa langit? sorry too late na ... you have time in the world to follow the footstep of my beloved son jesus christ while you are still living in the earth. but you ignore it.

again for me, iyong science and knowledge that we have, won't be able to answer all the mysteries of heaven. sample na lang dyan iyong story na sinabi ko kanina. bakit ganito? bakit ganyan? paano kaya kung etong animal ay cousin ni ganito? i think we should focus more in our salvation, dahil pagnamatay naman tayo malalaman naman natin lahat eto. prophets gave us warning already like wars, famine, disease, earthquakes, fire ... signs na iyan for the coming of our lord jesus christ. example na lang iyong attack sa U.S. embassy sa libya or iyong nuclear facility sa iran. i'm not trying to scare people but saying that everthing will come to past ... dahil nakasaad na iyan sa bible ... ang tanong ko lang sa inyo ay ready na ba kayong humarap kay jesus christ? prepare na ba kayo? ako hindi pa

i just hope religion caused violence like what occured in Libya won't happen again,
anyway goodluck on your quest for salvation bro.

I agree with Mr. Darkshader. I'am a believer. Hindi ako super banal na lagi nagsisimba but I do my best to apply God's teaching in my life. Good things happened to me ever since at grateful ako parati sa kung anung meron ako. Indeed God works in mysterious ways, lagi ako nagdadasal kahit nasan ako. I find time to communicate with Him kahit nagphophoto copy ako ng reports ko sa office, while walking papunta sa Dorm at kahit saan pa. I believe lahat ng nakasaad sa Bibliya ay nangyari at mangyayari pa lamang yung iba. Lahat din ng hiningi ko ibinigay niya although hindi abrupt. Good things will happen if you are good and have faith always. In God We Trust..
