This one looks interesting

Bleach Repeat & Reboot Volume 2 – Stage
Back on January 19th, we reported here on Saiyan Island that Bleach author Kubo Tite will be offering three weeks of Bleach information as the manga is on break. Well, below is part 2, which contains 5 pages worth of information on three new scans!

Image

The first scan of mentions this edition of the information reveal is titled Bleach Repeat & Reboot Volume 2 – Stage (part 1 located at this link). It will uncover a brand new battlefield in Bleach and continue from last week on what happened to the Gotei 13 after Ichigo defeated Aizen.

Scan #2 talks about squads 5 to 9 of the Gotei 13.

Image

The first person of focus is the Hirako Shinji, who has returned to the Gotei 13 as the Captain of the Fifth Division.

Question: What happened to Hirako’s hair?

Kubo: Since his hair can’t grow all that much over 17 months, only his bangs changed a little bit. And one day I’d like to draw how Hinamori, who was heartbroken after losing Aizen, developed a good trusting relationship with Hirako.

Pictured in the scan from the Sixth Division is Captain Kuchiki Byakuya. He has somewhat changed his appearance with more expensive ornaments, citing the Captain’s white overcoat was a bit cheap. As for Sixth Division Lieutenant Abarai Renji, he has become more wild and rough over the 17 months after Ichigo’s defeat of Aizen. He now has a towel wrapped around his wrists, and a specially made, not store bought ornament in his hair.

Q: Has Renji trained hard to become stronger?

Kubo: Yes.

Q: Have Other people trained as well?

Kubo: Yes.

Q: So they wouldn’t be troubled by even Aizen-level opponents?

Kubo: They’re not quite at that level (laughs). What can I say, they’ve become stronger. But even so, they haven’t gotten to the point where they’re not worried about Aizen-level opponents (laughs).

Q: Will they display new abilities or techniques in the new arc?

Kubo: That will be revealed. Renji’s bankai has already changed.

Komamura Sajin, the Captain of the Seventh Division has changed his clothing a bit, equipping himself with armor-like shoulder adornments extended to his neck, forearm and feet. Komamura felt distressed after the loss of his close friend Kaname Tosen, who was the former Ninth Division Captain.

As for Kyouraku Shunsui, the Eighth Division Captain, the origin of his pink, flower-filled kimono will be covered in the next arc. He wears it for a reason, there is history that will be unfolded.

Q: The senior captains doesn’t change their appearance much, so Kyouraku did not change either?

Kubo: Yes. Captains who holds the position for a very long period will not change a lot. Thats because they’ve undergo numerous pitched battles in the past. However, we will witnesses the differences and new sides in the future battles. I guess Shunsui show off his Bankai. Also the pink kimono that he wore contains some history/background
Lastly, Muguruma Kensei has fatefully returned as the Ninth Division Captain. Kensei was the one to saved the current Ninth Division Lieutenant Hisagi Shuhei from a Hollow when he was young.

The Ninth Division is in charge of editing the Sereitei news magazine. Hisagi still wears his shirt in a sleeveless fashion to pay tribute to Kensei from a hundred years ago in addition to the tattooed “69″. The “6″ represents Kensei’s last name, “Muguruma,” which uses the kanji for “6″ in it, while the “9″ represents the Ninth Division

Scan #3 covers the stages or battlefields that have seen multiple clashes of Bleach action. It also previews a new battlefield to come!

Image

Naruki City – The place where Ichigo’s friend Keigo lives. This is the battlefield for the Lost Agent arc and the base for Xcution.

Seireitei – This is the center of Soul Society, where the Shinigami live. Soul Society itself already has 1 million years of history.

Rukongai – This place is Located outside of Seireitei and is separated into 320 districts.

Karakura Town – A town located near central Tokyo that has a center of spiritual activity. Also the home of Ichigo Kurosaki.

Hueco Mundo – A place that is largely desert. Former Espada #2 Barragan’s kingdom was also located here.

The new arc is located neither in Karakura Town nor Soul Society. Although it is a new location, it is “underneath somewhere” and “unexpectedly close” to a place we’ve already seen. The scan mentions the new battlefield will be a palace made of ice. As you can see in the scan, there is a rough sketch of two pillars from the new arc’s battlefield. Behind them, is a palace of ice. The scan mentions that “perhaps the new enemies are hiding in there.” Also, there are tall cliffs and precipices in the new location. Everything is covered with ice and what is that at the very end resembles a large waterfall.

Kubo mentions in the scan’s title comment that “in the new arc, I want to draw a place like a “palace of ice. It will be colored white, blues, and silver.”

Then there is an interview with Kubo-sensei.

Q: In the new arc, the Shinigami will of course be represented, but will other characters from the past also appear?

Kubo: Yes, if the Arrancar appear, I think they will stand with the Shinigami.

Q: Will there be characters that appear in the role of a friend?

Kubo: Ulquiorra has already turned into ash. Grimmjow might become a friend. Also, what about Harribel, who is still alive? But, I wonder how I’d bring them out of Hueco Mundo. I think Harribel would not leave Hueco Mundo.

Q: Was the idea of Arrancars becoming friends in your plans before this break? Or was it just a feeling that they might return?

Kubo: They might appear. Or it could be that they might not appear. (laughs) Even if they did appear, it wouldn’t be individually, but as a group.

Q: What about Nel?

Kubo: I think I will let Nel appear.

Q: I’d really like to see her interactions with Kon.

Kubo: Kon did not appear in the Lost Agent arc. But to tell the truth, he has rarely appeared since the end of the Soul Society arc, roughly five years ago. (laugh) People who only recently started reading might not know that he exists. (laugh)

Q: It can’t be that you’ve forgotten him?

Kubo: (laugh)

Will the Espada return in the new arc? A Shonen Jump editor makes a courageous prediction! N/A means not applicable because the character is dead.

0. Yammy – N/A, he’s dead
1. Stark – extremely unlikely
2. Barragan – N/A, he’s dead
3. Harribel – unlikely
4. Ulquiorra – N/A, he’s dead
5. Nnoitra – extremely unlikely
6. Grimmjow – very likely
7. Zommari – extremely unlikely
8. Szayel – N/A he’s dead
9. Aaroniero – N/A, he’s dead
Previous No 3. Nel – very likely

Bleach Anime Coming to An End at Tuesday Timeslot
Japanese TV listings have revealed that the popular Bleach anime will be coming to an end March 27th. The series, which runs at 6:00 PM PT, will be replaced by the Rock Lee anime.

A fan tweeted Bleach animation director Hiroki Takagi with the scanned listing below, to which Takagi responded by saying, “So quick. I was going to paste it… /(^o^)\”

It’s unclear at this time what the future of Bleach is, and if it is being completely canceled or moved to a different timeslot. Whichever the case, we expect it will make a return eventually.

Bleach Live Action Movie Officially Announced by Viz Media
BANKAI… Hollywood style! Today Viz Media has officially announced that Warner Bros. has acquired the rights to create a Bleach live action movie! Development is slated to begin this year. No casting or story information has been released, but check out the official press release below for all the information we know so far!

VIZ Media, the largest distributor and licensor of anime and manga in the North America, announced today that Warner Bros. Pictures has acquired the live-action feature film rights to the hit manga and anime property BLEACH. The announcement comes after another successful year for BLEACH in print, digital publishing, cable television, streaming video, consumer products and video-on-demand.

“BLEACH has built a huge international following in its manga and anime formats, and we’re excited that Warner Bros. shares our belief that BLEACH can also become a fantastic live-action film,” said Jason Hoffs of VIZ Productions, VIZ Media’s Hollywood-based production company. “BLEACH is an exciting opportunity to mix Japanese and Hollywood storytelling to create something new for the big screen, and we’re thrilled for the opportunity to further expose its unique characters and story to film audiences everywhere.”

Peter Segal (GET SMART, THE LONGEST YARD) of Callahan Filmworks is producing with an eye toward directing. The film’s creative team also includes screenwriter Dan Mazeau, who recently penned Warner Bros.’ upcoming sequel to CLASH OF THE TITANS. Callahan Filmworks partner Michael Ewing and Masi Oka (best known for his roles on NBC’s HEROES and CBS’s HAWAII FIVE-0) will produce. From VIZ Productions, Hoffs will serve as Producer, and Branon Coluccio will be Executive Producer. Screenplay development will commence in 2012.

The popular BLEACH animated and manga series, created by Tite Kubo, follows the adventures of Ichigo, a teenager with the ability to see ghosts. When his family is attacked by a Hollow — a malevolent lost soul – Ichigo encounters Rukia, a Soul Reaper tasked to hunting Hollows, and inadvertently absorbs her powers. Now, Ichigo must dedicate his life to protecting the innocent and helping tortured souls find peace.

BLEACH is a tremendously successful multimedia property around the world. The manga has been licensed to more than a dozen countries and has over 75 million copies in print in Japan alone. In North America, the manga (rated ‘T’ for Teens) has consistently appeared on the New York Times Best Seller list for Manga and the Neilsen BookScan Top 50 Graphic Novels list, selling more than 2.1 million copies across 36 volumes.

The BLEACH manga is also available digitally through VIZManga.com and for download through the VIZ Manga App for iPad®, iPhone® and iPod® touch, where it has proven to be a top-seller. The series was recently sped up to bring North American readers up-to-date with the latest story arc in Japan, culminating in it being featured in WEEKLY SHONEN JUMP ALPHA, the groundbreaking digital manga magazine that VIZ Media just launched at the end of January 2012.

The BLEACH animated series (rated TV-14) has topped the ratings on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim, sold over 1.8 million DVDs and consistently ranked among Hulu’s most watched shows, This success has further spawned an array of related video games (over 820,000 sold), apparel, action figures, trading cards and other merchandise.

Bleach Live Action Movie Interview with VIZ Productions
Viz Media has announced that Warner Bros. has acquired the rights to work on a Bleach Live Action Movie! VIZ Productions, Viz Media’s live action license and production house for anime/manga properties, will be providing expertise to Warner Bros., but fans are worried what kind of result the major Hollywood studio will make of their beloved Bleach series. With this fan worry in mind, Deb Aoki from About.com decided to interview Jason Hoffs, Head of Production at VIZ Productions!

Q: What exactly is VIZ Productions? That is, what are VIZ Productions’ goals and purpose that makes what you do related, but distinct from VIZ Media’s publishing and licensing divisions?

Jason Hoffs: VIZ Productions was formed to produce live-action theatrical film and television projects based on cutting edge Japanese intellectual property. We work very closely with manga and anime as source material but are also working from novels and live-action films as well.

There are so many works that have originated in Japan that are unpublished or are almost unknown in the States. We love working with hit properties like Bleach, but we are always also digging for hidden gems that (we hope!) can make great films.

Q: Is VIZ Productions currently working on other film projects besides Bleach?

Jason Hoffs: We have several projects at various stages of development at the studios. All You Need is Kill, an adaptation based on the science fiction novella by Hiroshi Sakurazaka is on the fast track at Warner Brothers.

The screenwriter Robert Ben Garant (Night at the Museum) is adapting the manga Tuxedo Gin for Walt Disney Pictures.

We are also working on many other film projects in various stages of creative development. Once we begin working with a property, our first step is usually to identify a screenwriter or director (or both) who is a fan of the property, and shares a vision with the creator and with our team for how to approach the film version.

Q: Is Bleach the first VIZ Productions project to get to this stage in Hollywood, or was Dragon Ball: Evolution also a VIZ Productions project?

Jason Hoffs: VIZ Productions was not involved with the Dragon Ball movie at all. The Dragon Ball film project had been in development at 20th Century Fox for several years, and had entered production before VIZ Productions was formed.

Q: There’s always some anxiety from fans when Japanese manga is adapted by Hollywood, that it will be… well, changed a lot from the original stories/characters/premise. Would you like to address this issue/concern from fans?

Jason Hoffs: Every creator, and every fan, has a picture of the property or a relationship with the property that is formed with the original medium. Creators and fans of manga are not alone in that regard. Any adaptation requires a change of format and of style.

In the case of manga, so much has to be condensed to squeeze the story into a feature film format. So even in the best of circumstances, it’s a big challenge. Fans have been disappointed with recent manga and anime-based features. We have to learn from these examples, and keep working to do better.

We build a relationship between the creator, his/her team in Japan and the Hollywood creative team to create a basic common vision from the beginning of the process. There is an essence or quality in the original material that makes it attractive as a feature film, and the team tries to preserve and translate this essence into the film version.

Our greatest goal, and certainly the goal of the creator, is that the film should delight the fans. At the same time, the intention of the film version is to introduce a larger global audience to the property. It will always be a challenge to balance fidelity to the original work, while supporting the creativity and originality of the filmmakers in bringing their vision to the film.

Q: How long ago did this process start (from initial pitch/idea to a signed development deal with Warner Brothers)? By any chance did this process start when Kubo-sensei came to San Diego Comic-Con in 2008?

Jason Hoffs: Yes, we first began our discussions in 2008. We all went back and forth on the key creative elements, and when we were satisfied, began to assemble to team here. Because Bleach is such a large and popular property, it took some time to make the deal with Warner Bros. Now we are all so excited to begin the creative work on the screenplay!

Speaking of Comic-Con 2008, the outpouring of enthusiasm for Kubo-sensei’s visit was amazing. So many fans waited for hours in line to meet him and so many of the costumes, zanpakuto and accessories were beautifully and lovingly made. When we think about the level of passion and commitment, both on the creator’s and the fan’s side, it reminds us how important it is to make the best Bleach film we can.

Q: Was Bleach a project that VIZ Productions pitched to movie studios, or was it a situation where the producers approached VIZ Productions to get the rights? There was mention in the press release that a few folks involved with this project are big fans of Bleach.

Jason Hoffs: VIZ Productions teamed up with Masi Oka early in the process. Masi is a huge fan of Bleach, and a true otaku.

Early on, we had many discussions with Shueisha and Kubo-sensei about the creative direction of the film. Masi had worked with Pete Segal and his partner Michael Ewing on Get Smart, and Masi brought Bleach to Pete. The writer, Dan Mazeau had been on everybody’s radar, so when he committed we were all thrilled. Once the team was assembled, we approached Warner Brothers.

Q: Now that Warner Brothers has acquired the rights to produce Bleach, what does that entail? What I mean is, what happens now? I know there’s a lot of steps involved to make a big project like this come to fruition, but any idea when fans might expect to see this Bleach feature film? I understand that it’s probably not possible for you to give us a firm release date at this early stage of the game, but can you give us some idea where things stand now?

Jason Hoffs: Our screenwriter, Dan Mazeau, will begin writing the film shortly, with the input of our director and the producing team. We hope to have a first screenplay later this year. We of course communicate with Kubo-sensei and the Shueisha team at key stages in the process.

Q: Can you share any reactions or thoughts from Kubo-sensei or Shueisha, regarding the Bleach movie project?

Jason Hoffs: Kubo-sensei and the entire Shueisha team cares deeply about Bleach and its millions of passionate fans. We take the trust they have placed in us very seriously, and we very much hope to make a film that they can all be proud of.
