Do you also play with non-PlayStation devices? Do you enjoy playing as a plumber saving a princess? Or some bald marines? Or maybe you want to play using the touchscreen?

Today Nintendo gave fans just a taste of how The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild takes the franchise to new heights. Nintendo’s booth at E3 immerses attendees in the world of the game. As E3 attendees investigate Hyrule, they can explore the game any way they want because the world is so vast and players are not required to take a pre-determined path. This sense of freedom and vastness will truly come alive in the final game when the experience isn’t limited by the restrictions of a show floor demo.

During a Nintendo Treehouse: Live demo, Nintendo showed that heroic Link needs to be resourceful as he explores his environment. It’s important for players to become familiar with their surroundings so they can find weapons or collect them from defeated enemies. Food helps Link sustain his hearts and can give him a temporary boost or ability that will sustain him.

The game breaks with some conventions from the series. For example, many of the minor enemies are no longer scattered randomly around the world, as many now live together in colonies. Link can climb towers and massive structures to get a bearing on his surroundings. He can even reach the top of mountains – any mountain he can see, he can climb. He can paraglide to lower areas or even use his shield to slide down a mountain. Link will travel across fields, through forests and to mountain peaks.

The game’s wild world surrounds Link, and he must pay attention to changes in climate, as a shift in weather or temperature can affect the environment and his ability to survive in it. A sudden downpour might douse a roaring campfire or a lightning storm might be attracted to Link’s metallic weapons. Players might need to bundle up with warmer clothes or change into something better suited to the desert heat.

More than 100 Shrines of Trials dot the landscape, waiting for players to discover and explore them in any order they want. As players work their way through the traps and puzzles inside, they’ll earn special items and other rewards that will help them on their adventure. Puzzles in the game often have multiple answers, and secrets can be found everywhere. Exploration and discovery are a huge part of the fun.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is scheduled to launch simultaneously for both the Wii U console and Nintendo’s next system, code-named NX, in 2017. The game also includes compatibility with amiibo, which are sold separately. Nintendo announced a new series of amiibo figures specific to the game that includes Link with a bow (“Archer”), Link on horseback (“Rider”), and a “Guardian” that is the first amiibo with flexible parts. The existing Wolf Link amiibo works with the game as well: When players tap a Wolf Link amiibo to the Wii U GamePad controller, Wolf Link will attack enemies on his own and help players to hunt. He has three hearts, unless players carry over save data from The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD. Wolf Link disappears when his hearts run out. Details can be found here.

Why The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is getting voice acting and sci-fi elements
http://www.polygon.com/2016/6/21/119964 ... i-elements
There are two tiny but important elements that many fans have been wondering about, though. First off, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will be the first Zelda game to feature voice acting — though it will not be fully voiced.

"It’s really difficult to leave an impression on players with just text," Breath of the Wild producer Eiji Aonuma told Polygon. "It’s not that I made everything voiced. But I have these moments where I want to leave impressions on users. I add voice there."

Aonuma recalled a moment early in the new game’s development where he first heard a character with "actual human voice." According to the long-time Zelda developer, that moment "touched [his] heart" and "was really striking emotions."

You can beat The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild without finishing the story
http://www.polygon.com/e3/2016/6/15/119 ... ild-ending
"Users may not actually get the full story depending on how they play this game and how they strategize and solve puzzles," producer Eiji Aonuma told Polygon. "Users are able to go to the very end goal without revealing why Link woke up the way he did and where he did. Whether you want to reveal the storyline and find out why Link woke up, or you want to just go straight to the goal, that's an option totally up to the user."

When asked, Aonuma confirmed that a player could go directly to the final boss of the game from its opening moments if they wanted. However, he also stressed that he didn't view this as an ideal way to play.

"Anybody who can go straight to the goal without doing anything else — there's two possibilities," Aonuma said. "Either they're a really good gamer, or they could be somebody that's a little bit crazy. But it's not impossible. I created the game like that.

Nintendo's massive E3 Legend of Zelda demo is only one percent of the game
http://www.polygon.com/e3/2016/6/15/119 ... ndo-wii-nx
Considering the size and sheer variety of things to do in this demo, that statistic seems impressive. What does it actually mean, though? According to The Legend of Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma, quite a lot.

"For this game, if 100 players play this game, there will be 100 options and 100 game experiences," Aonuma told Polygon. "I wanted to create an environment where if the user played it today and then played it again tomorrow, they would have a different experience."

The Zelda series has always featured large worlds, but nothing has ever been on the scale Nintendo is suggesting with this one. However, Aonuma says that won't necessarily be the only style of Zelda game made going forward.

The Makers of Zelda On Why Their Games Are Usually Late
http://kotaku.com/the-makers-of-zelda-o ... 1782514185
Nearly every major Zelda console game from the past two decades has been delayed, usually at least by a year. That sets the series apart from Mario Kart, Mario Party and just about every other Nintendo franchise that more consistently ships on time and, perhaps not coincidentally, is not as critically well received.

Check the record. The all-time great Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time was supposed to come out in 1997. It was released in 1998. The celebrated Zelda: Wind Waker slipped from 2002 to 2003. Twilight Princess? 2005 to 2006. The next Zelda, the one that was widely regarded as the best game of E3 2016 last week? Nintendo announced it for 2015, but it is now slated for 2017.]
“A lot of times what we try to tackle takes a lot longer than anticipated,” he said. “So that’s why many times the development struggle there is a delay. The people around us keep telling us: ‘This is the last one. You really need to shape up.’” Aonuma was laughing when he said this, but it’s not hard to believe.
