Super Smash Bros. will not have cross-platform play
Plus, Sakurai on third-party characters.
Super Smash Bros. won’t have cross-platform play on Wii U and 3DS since each version of the game has different stages, director Masahiro Sakurai told Joystiq at E3.
Both versions will still have some level of correspondence, however. You’ll be able to transfer characters you’ve customized to the Wii U version, Sakurai said.
Unfortunately, Sakurai didn’t go into detail as to what sort of customization he was referring to, but did say he’s not talking about costumes or things players would need to unlock through repetitive tasks.
Asked if the Stage Builder introduced in Super Smash Bros. Brawl would return, Sakurai issued a “no comment.â€
During a separate interview with IGN, Sakurai discussed the likliehood of Namco Bandai characters appearing in the game, considering it’s being developed by a Namco Bandai studio.
“Just because the game is being cooperatively developed with Namco Bandai involved, that doesn’t at all mean that they’d be given any special consideration for having characters in the game,†Sakurai said. “Smash Bros. can still be considered as an all-star collection of Nintendo characters. Just like with Mega Man or any other third-party character, it would have to be a very special situation.â€
He continued, “Adding third-party characters should be considered a very special case. In the last game, when we added Sonic and Snake, there were lots of different hoops to jump through as far as getting approvals and making sure all the parties involved were happy with the way things went.â€
Sakurai then asked IGN, if they were to pick one Namco Bandai character to appear, who would that be? IGN suggested Pac-Man, leading Sakurai to ask them a series of questions such as what his Final Smash might look like, how he could become super-powered, and more.

The Villager’s Rare Moment Of Cuteness In Super Smash Bros. Screens
The latest batch of Super Smash Bros. screenshots from the official site are all of the Wii U version. For once, the Villager from Animal Crossing doesn’t look quite as intimidating as you would expect. I suppose even Batman trips over his cape sometimes.

Im curious if Nintendo will have a similar promo for this like they did for MK8.... That would be great just to keep the momentum going... Cant beat paying getting another "full" game for free.
