Pokémon Company tease “even more amazing” games for 2012
Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu has shared a greetings card that they received from The Pokémon Company.

Whilst it didn’t confirm any new information, the company did tease that they were preparing to release “even more amazing games” in 2012, than they did in 2011.

With 2011 having seen the release of Pokémon Typing DS, Pokédex 3D, Pokémon Rumble Blast and PokéPark 2: Wonders Beyond in Japan, it will be interesting to see what they have lined up this year.

We already know about Nintendo DS title Pokémon X Nobunaga’s Ambition, although there’ll be hope riding on a core entry to release on Nintendo 3DS, perhaps Pokémon Gray.

Eyes will also be looking to what Nintendo have lined up for the Wii U.

Miyamoto working on an unannounced 'original' game
(joystiq.com)

zoomin.tv interview video

A recent Zoomin Games interview with Shigeru Miyamoto mentioned in passing that, in addition to Luigi's Mansion 2 for 3DS and Pikmin 3 to Wii U, he is also working on what ZoomIn called an "undisclosed original title." Speaking about that mysterious new project, Miyamoto said "If you ask me, 'Is it too much pressure to try to come out with something new?' I have to say no, I'm enjoying myself."

By way of explaining his own style, he gave us some idea of what to expect. "Each creator has his or her own field for which he or she is particularly good at," Miyamoto said. "I'm not saying that I am particularly bad at making the very photo-realistic video games. But when it comes to the realistic games, you have to create something familiar. I personally want to make something really different."

The rest of the interview is devoted to damage control from that time he didn't even actually say he was retiring from Nintendo.

Reggie: We don’t care what the gaming competitors are doing
Image
Lately, fans have been wondering if the Wii U will be able to keep up with Sony and Microsoft’s next round of consoles. The Wii U may have a leg up on the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360 when it launches this year, but there is some doubt that it will be a competitive piece of hardware for the next few years.

The thing is, Nintendo simply isn’t concerned about the competition.

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime, when asked if the Wii U will be competitive in the long run, said that “we don’t care what the gaming competitors are doing.” The company is more concerned about being able to “drive a great new experience that’s going to be compelling”.

Fils-Aime said the following during a Spike TV interview at CES:

“So, you know, we’re fortune that we drive our own innovation agenda. We don’t care what any of the… we don’t care what the gaming competitors are doing. We don’t care what’s happening in the broader entertainment landscape. What we’re looking to do is drive a great new experience that’s going to be compelling, that’s going to have consumers say, ‘I have to buy the Wii U to get this new experience.’”

THE BUZZ: Konami has announced the official release date of Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D on the 3DS.

EGM’s TAKE: Snake Eater could be a tipping point for the 3DS. If such a massive game can make a smooth transition then it could spell good things for the handheld’s future.

Back when Fatal Frame 4 was confirmed to be not coming in North America for the Wii due to its bugs or whatnot, a lot were dismayed. Well, for the fans of the Fatal Frame series who are hoping for Japan’s Ghost Camera, dubbed as ‘Spirit Camera: The Cursed Memoir’ in North America, to be released in the United States, they got what they wanted.

Kid Icarus Uprising Game Details and Trailer
THE BUZZ: Nintendo has released a brand new trailer and several gameplay details for Kid Icarus Uprising on the 3DS.
The gameplay details:

Image

Introduction: The game’s story begins with the return of the dark goddess Medusa and her Underworld Army. With the help of Palutena, goddess of light and guardian of the human race, the heroic angel Pit must combat the forces of darkness as he battles Medusa and her minions by air and by land.

Fiend’s Cauldron: The Fiend’s Cauldron is an incredible new system that allows players to customize their play experience by adjusting the intensity level. Intensity ranges from 0.0 – 9.0 for each individual Chapter. As the intensity increases, players will be able to earn more Hearts and more powerful weapon drops from defeated enemies. Hearts also can be used to purchase new weapons. The standard intensity setting is 2.0, but players can precisely adjust it by increments of 0.1. In order to increase the intensity, players must bet by placing an increasing number of Hearts into the Fiend’s Cauldron. If the player is defeated during the Chapter, some Hearts will be lost and the intensity will be lowered.

Weapons: A wide variety of collectible weapons offers an extraordinary amount of replay value. With nine different categories of weapons, ranging from Bows to Claws, players can learn the unique characteristics of each weapon and determine which is best suited for each battle and their style of play.

Vehicles: During certain parts of his adventure, Pit will have access to special vehicles such as the Exo Tank. Pit can use the tank’s powerful drift ability to boost over jumps or defeat enemies with the tank’s ramming horn.

Stand: Kid Icarus: Uprising uses a control scheme designed to fit the game’s unique blend of flight, shooting and melee combat, and offers tremendous precision and depth for dedicated players. The left hand uses the Circle Pad while the right hand uses the stylus. Every copy of the game will come with a free stand that holds the Nintendo 3DS at an angle above any flat surface, providing players with a new kind of gaming experience.

Circle Pad Pro: Kid Icarus: Uprising is compatible with the Circle Pad Pro accessory, offering an alternate control scheme for left-handed players. With the Circle Pad Pro, players hold the stylus in their left hand and use the Circle Pad with their right hand.

EGM’s TAKE: The trailer shows off the game’s on rails shooting section, which actually looks fast paced and well put together, similar to the old Star Fox 64 days, with an old arcade feel and points scoring system. Boss fights are also shown, which appear to be a simple target, hack and slash affair with incredibly large enemies. For a 3Ds game it looks simple, beautiful and with so much going on on screen it’s obvious that the handheld has a lot of hidden potential that developers will hopefully be able to tap more as its life cycle moves forward. If your a fan of the old classic Kid Icarus then you shouldn’t be disappointed with this latest offering.

Should Resident Evil Revelations have been Resident Evil 6?
"We should have slapped a number on it," says Kawata
Resident Evil Revelations producer Masachika Kawata believes his new 3DS game is so good that it should be treated as a main game in the series rather than a spin-off. During the latest Iwata Asks discussion, Kawata admits that Capcom should have slapped a number on the title.

Kawata said: "Maybe I shouldn't say this, but looking at the finished game makes me think why we didn't slap a number on the title! It's a true-as-can-be Resident Evil game from head to toe, so please enjoy it."

Last year, Kawata told Nintendo Power that he sees Resident Evil Revelations as a Resident Evil 5 sequel. So why isn't it called Resident Evil 6?

Well seeing as it's set between Resident Evil 4 and 5, it probably wouldn't have made sense to call it Resident Evil 6. Having said that, the first half of Resident Evil 3: Nemesis takes place before the events of Resident Evil 2.

Mario Party 9's Blinding Box Art
Here's Mario Party 9's box art. Take a look below if you want to lose your vision forever.

The art shows off a very, very colorful array of Nintendo's classic characters from the Mario franchise. Hopefully the manual is just as bright!

The game comes out for Wii on March 11, 2012.

Mewtwo Teleporting To Pokémon Black And White In North America
Image
Last year, The Pokémon Company gave away a special Mewtwo for a limited time over Wi-Fi to Pokémon Black/White owners in Japan. Now, that giveaway event is headed to North America.

Starting February 12th, The Pokémon Company will begin distributing Mewtwo over Wi-Fi for Black/White owners. The giveaway page specifies that the special Mewtwo will come with a move that he can’t normally learn, so it does seem like this is the same as the Japanese giveaway, where Mewtwo came with Psystrike, Shadow Ball, Aura Sphere, and Electro Ball.

In the Japanese giveaway, Mewtwo was at level 70 and carried a King’s Rock, which gives you a higher chance of making the opponent flinch.

Capcom's Yoshinori Ono Says Wii U Will Have Yet-Unrevealed Features
THE BUZZ: In a recent interview, Street Fighter X Tekken producer Yoshinori Ono had an interesting comment on what we expect the Wii U to be—and what it will actually end up being.

Image

EGM’s TAKE: Here’s Ono’s comment from the interview with Spanish-language gaming site 3D Juegos, translated by NeoGAF member Indyana:

“What we saw last E3 is not a reflection of everything this console is able to offer. We have been trying the development kits and some of its new characteristics will improve its possibilities. It isn’t something like Kinect or similar accessories, it’s something different.

I can’t tell you more about it because, if I do, Nintendo will send assassins to finish me! (laughs) But let’s say that Wii U will be a console with so many and unique possibilities that it will be difficult to show them in the box they are going to sell it or to be published by magazines and other mediums.”

Ever since E3, there’s been a lot of questions on what exactly the Wii U is going to end up providing in terms of new opportunities for games—and what direction Nintendo would be taking the console in.

In regards to that, these comments from Ono aren’t all that surprising. Nintendo did the same thing with the Wii and 3DS—keep a few details here and there secret when announcing the platforms, only to be revealed later. With the Wii, there were rumors that a big factor of the console hadn’t been shown yet as its launch date neared; while that never really panned out, it would make sense for Nintendo to be even more secretive about the full range of the Wii U’s functions this time around. They know that they really need to create something that will resonate with gamers, yet also know that Microsoft and Sony are right in the middle of putting together all of the details of their own new platforms.

It’s the classic rule of poker—know when to show your hand, and know when to keep it close to your chest.

Wii U Ships Worldwide This Holiday Season
Nintendo hopes to return to profitability early next fiscal year.
Image

Bloomberg Japan reports that Nintendo will release the Wii U this holiday season in North America, Japan, Europe and Australia. CEO Satoru Iwata announced the more specific time period during an earnings conference in Osaka today.

Iwata also spoke about the 3DS, saying that Nintendo plans on continually releasing major titles for the system. Through these and other measures, Nintendo hopes to return to profitability early in the upcoming fiscal term.

Iwata's statements came following an earnings report in which Nintendo slashed sales and earnings forecasts, and also reduced shipment targets for Wii and 3DS.

Tomb Raider Not Hitting Wii U
Crystal Dynamics' upcoming Tomb Raider game won't be coming to Nintendo's new console, the Wii U. At least not anytime soon.

Image

In a recently published FAQ on the game, the studio says development of the title started long before Wii U was announced, and that if they did port it to Wii U in the future it would have to be built differently for that platform.

“At this time no," Global Brand Director Karl Stewart said when asked if Tomb Raider was coming to Wii U. "When we started developing the game we made a conscious decision that it was all about building the game for a platform and making sure the game was specific to that platform.

"Given that we’ve been working on the game quite a while before Wii U was announced I think it would not be right to try and port it across. If we started building a game for the Wii U we would build it very differently and we would build it with unique functionality.”

Beyond that, Crystal Dynamics said fans can expect a global release for the game on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. No release date has been set, but Tomb Raider will likely hit this year.

Nintendo Reports Losses And Lowers Projections
Despite having a successful 2011 holiday, Nintendo is still showing overall losses and is lowering sales projections for 2012.

Image

Apparently, much of Nintendo's losses can be attributed the the poor exchange rate of the yen and the dollar. Nintendo is a Japanese company, but a large percentage of its sales come from overseas sales.

For the fiscal year ending in March 2012, Nintendo is projecting losses $837 million dollars, which is more than twice its original projections, which put the company at around $258 million in losses.

Where Nintendo originally projected 3DS sales to reach 16 million units for the same period, it has now scaled that back to 14 million units. Despite scaling back projections, Nintendo did say that the 3DS had a strong holiday and that, "With the regained momentum and a strong lineup of software on the way, prospects for the platform remain strong."

Even the system that people seem to refuse to stop buying are down. The Wii projections for the full 2012 year were at 12 million units, but Nintendo has dropped that down 10 million.

No projections on the Wii U just yet, but Nintendo did confirm that we will be seeing it this year.

What's in a name? Nintendo considering Wii U rebrand, sources claim
Next-gen console could be renamed before E3
(Cvg)
Nintendo is considering changing the name of its next-generation console, Wii U, sources close to the platform holder have suggested.

CVG understands that following a disappointing E3 reveal - and public confusion over 3DS - serious discussions are ongoing at the highest level in the US and Japan as to whether the firm should cut its losses and give the console a different name.

Public confusion over the Nintendo 3DS has forced the platform holder to roll out bold red box stickers to differentiate the similarly-named system from the original DS, and it even enforced the TV tagline 'This is not DS. This is Nintendo 3DS.'

It's been indicated that Nintendo is keen not to repeat the same mistakes with its next-generation home console, and we're told a change of name is a real possibility - especially after president Satoru Iwata told investors Wii U needs to learn "a bitter lesson" from 3DS and public confusion over its features.

Nintendo showed off the Wii U for the first time at E3 2011, which resulted in its share price dropping to a five year low.

A strong focus on Wii U's new controller with a screen - first revealed by CVG - and barely a glimpse of the console itself left some consumers bemused as to what the Wii U was, and Iwata confessed the company should have better explained how it works.

He said following E3: "Because we put so much emphasis on the controller, there appeared to be some misunderstandings. We should have made more effort to explain how it works.

"We haven't made any kind of blunder, but I should have shown a single picture of the new console, then started talking about the controller. The console is not drastically different, and Wii U is about the controller. The console itself will be almost invisible."
