Actually it's all really up to you. Personally, I think both careers (networking at programming) are big earners even here in the Philippines. So it's your choice kung saan mo mas gusto kasi yan ang gagawin mo day in day out.
I took up CCNA 1-4 in college pero I didn't take the exam kasi dun palang alam ko na mas gusto ko ang programming. Kaya I took MCPD-EA C# certification instead. I had no formal training sa C# pero since interested talaga ko, natyaga ko yung self paced books para matapos yung exams. I don't think I could have done that with Cisco Certification.

kailangan talaga sa cisco certs ng hands on experience. ang alam ko sa dlsu (at mapua it din yata) meron tie up with cisco para sa mga equipments. ako expired na yung MCAD certification ko. kailangan ng kumuha uli for .net 3.5. ang mahirap lang dun sa may certification pero wala pang work experience puro theoretical yung basis ng knowledge. meron ako mga na interview na less than a year yung experience pero MS certified. puro by the book yung alam pero yung actual usage di nila ma explain kung paano or bakit ganun yung nakalagay sa bookboynevs wrote:Actually it's all really up to you. ako nag start ako as sys admin. inabutan ko pa sa company namin na nt 4 yung mga domain controllers. then naging win2k tapos win2k3. ngayon win2k8 na yung ginagamit for moss. tapos nag shift yung group namin to programming/app design. laking tulong din yung may background ka about sa network stuff, kahit basics lang lalo na kung web developer

However, based on experience you shouldn't just focus on certification, programing language specific kasi yan e. Mas malayo mararating mo sa industry kung iaaply mo yung Software Engineering skills mo. Meaning, marunong ka pag problem solving using UMLs. And from UMLs kaya mo makagawa ng code.

^^ Yup yun nga yun and many more like use case, sequence diagram etc...
SIla kasi yung foundation mo in building a good solution. Without those, its like building a house without a blueprint.
Kapag entry level programmer ka palang, hindi mo pa masyado maapreciate sya kasi most of the time, you'll be coding other people's design. Pero kapag nabigyan ka ng chance mag go through an end-to-end software lifecycle, those would be skills you'll need the most.

In letran we have specialization. at kasama nga dun yung system engineering.
pero software development kukunin ko e. sa programming kasi mataas grade ko.
may database administration pa nga pala. ayaw ko naman ng database lang. boring.

^ Can't really recommed kasi pareho naman sila okay. Here are some pros and cons I can think of for C# (Kasi c# gamit ko)
Pros:
* Ease of use - Madali magcode dahil sa Visual Studio. By madali I mean madali magedit, magalign, intellisense etc...
* Support - MSDN documentation and other sites are readily available.
* Applicable to new MS technology - Nauuso ngayon sa bagong version ng .NET is WPF and silverlight. Applicable parin yung C# sa mga to kasi sya yung code behind.
Cons:
* License is expensive: Di masyado affected programmer dito except the fact that most companies that use Visual Studio license are already stablished kasi may kamahalan ang VS.
* Technology efficiency is tied up to other MS products: Supported naman nila yung ibang non-ms products (MySQL, Oracle, etc...) kaya lang yung mga recommended ay MS din (MS SQL, IIS, silver light).
* OS dependency - Almost forgot this one. Pero as far as I know, medyo complicated pa if not impossible to run .NET code sa Linux or Mac. So most of the time your OS will be Windows when developing C# (Another tie-up)
Hope it helps!

I'm not sure about other programming patterns pero kung OOP (Object Oriented Programming) yung language, basta alam mo yung core syntaxes, maiintindihan mo na yung ibang language (like C#, C++, Java at VB.NET).
